Chapter 10

Foiled

We gathered up Volka and Atkinson, and, as expected, their reintroduction to Stormfall went about as well as predicted—which is to say, not well at all.

Maia, ever the professional, kept her focus on assessing everyone’s various bumps and scrapes, while glaring at the two bound Noctus Blades like she was plotting out the most efficient way to vivisect them.

Steve, still bleeding heavily from the wound he’d taken on the mission to take down the Hive Mind, was propped up against a bulkhead but still managed a groggy wave in their direction before stage whispering, “Should’ve left them where you found them.”

Delphina, on the other hand, didn’t even try to hide her disdain. “Well, ain’t this just a Hallmark reunion.” The way she kept shifting her grip on the hilt of her katana told me she was one wrong word away from taking matters into her own hands.

“Okay,” I said, clapping my hands together to break the increasingly awkward silence. “Now that we’re all here and everyone’s had a chance to glare intimidatingly at each other, how about we talk about how we’re going to go about freeing the captured guys from Mars?”

“Strategy?” Delphina snorted. “Sure, sugar. Our strategy so far has been to make life as miserable as possible for the Gehenna while trying not to die. It’s been… surprisingly effective.”

“Effective?” I asked. “Define effective.”

“Well, we’ve been doin’ our best to be a pain in their arse. Figured keeping the Gehenna busy was a good. We’ve hit supply lines, sabotaged a few key systems, and made damn sure they knew we were here. That Hive Mind you fried? Left ‘em without a proper playbook. They’ve been reactin’ to us, not the other way around. It’s been messy, but it’s kept ‘em busy.”

“And the Pure and Cleansed?” I pressed.

“Still locked down,” Maia said, her voice filled with frustration. “Even with their Hive Mind shattered, they’re not letting go of their ‘harvest.’ Whatever they’re planning for them, it’s big. And it’s bad. We’ve tried to do more to help them. Believe me, we’ve done everything we could to get to the Pure and the Cleansed. But every time we got close, the Gehenna forced us back. And the one time we managed to reach them…” She trailed off, her hand flexing in a helpless gesture. “We couldn’t find a way to free them.”

“Why not?” I asked, frowning.

She gestured vaguely toward the ceiling. “Their Aetherion armour. It’s… it’s not just acting like armour anymore. It’s like they’re locked into it somehow. Like the armour itself is holding them in some kind of stasis. I’ve managed to remotely heal a few of the Pure who weren’t too badly hurt—basic injuries, surface stuff—but breaking them out? Nothing I’ve tried even scratches the surface.”

Steve let out a grunt. “It’s creepy as hell, if you ask me. They just stand there in the cells they were piled into. Not fighting. Not moving. Not trying to escape. They’re alive, but it’s like their minds are switched off. If you ask me, that armour acts like a cage, but on the inside.
